"Learner profile: Junjie Lu"
Today I learned a lot about my classmate Junjie Lu. Junjie comes from Jiang Su China. he has been living in New York for three years and four months. He came here with his parents. Junjie doesn't decided what major he wants to learn in the future, but he might be interested about business. He said that he wants to create his own business. This is his second semester. The favorite activity Junjie likes is group work, he thinks more communicate is the fastest way to improve his English. He doesn't like sports but he exercises every day. Junjie thinks the easiest part for him about english is speaking, and the most difficult part is reading. Junjie told me that he doesn't have job yet,but he worked in the Subway restaurant before.
Gained from Experience or Books?
It has been said.” Not everything that is learned is contained in the book.” I agree with this quote. You can learn a lot in the book, but practice is more important. There’s an old expression that says, “It’s better to travel ten thousand miles than to read ten thousand books.” This sentence means learning from the books is important but experience is better. Book can give you knowledge and information you want to know, but life changes all the time. Books can tell you 90% of the knowledge, but when you step in to the work or social, the knowledge you learned just work few of them. Book is a dead thing, it contains older people’s experience, but our life is different to them, we can reference from the book but not deeply. Experience in practice is infinite. The reason why I tink knowledge gained from experience is more important than gained from books is because of my own experience. Last summer I wanted to go outside for work, I went to book store, restaurant, café and other place. They rejected me because of no work experience. Since that day, I know gained knowledge from the book it can’t help you a lot. Gained knowledge from experience is more significant. In conclusion, I think gained knowledge from the experience is greater than gained knowledge from the books.
A whimsical Technique of Writing
“This is a story with many layers. Though it’s not told chronologically, it is divided into three sections. Discuss the significance of the titles given to each part: Life, Death, and Immortality.” The reason why author use many layers and jump around the years to write this book is to make readers getting more interested in this book, and to separate the three different main ideas to each chapter. It would be a different story if it were written chronologically.
First, the author uses many layers to write this book to let readers getting more interested about this book, to catch readers with a hook. Unlike other famous authors who use step by step, Rebecca Skloot uses different way by rearrange the years into three big sections to let readers know what will happen by looking to the section title. And she also put some of her own experience inside of the book, like how she interviewed the Lacks family, and has been rejected. But she didn’t give up. She also jumps around from 1900s to 2010.
This book The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks is divided into three section Life, Death, and Immortality, and each section has many different chapters. Maybe this chapter is about 1951, and the next chapter will jump to 1999. These three main sections show us clearly what will happen in this huge section. The first section “Life” is about Henrietta’s life. She was born Loretta Pleasant in Roanoke, Virginia, on August 1, 1920. She knows she had cervical cancer when she had her third child, get treatment in Hopkins hospital and how her cell was been took without asking and how her life end. The second section is called “Death”, by looking at the title’s name; we can imagine what this section will be about. This section told us her cells had a name called HeLa, and how her cells become immortal. I didn’t read the last section yet, but by looking at the outline, we can figure out this section will be the story about the time the family know Henrietta’s cells had become famous and popular, and there’s nothing left for Lacks family. I think the last section will be heavy to read. If I were Henrietta Lacks child who heard my mother is still alive in other shape, it would be horrible to imagine. Like Deborah says” lf our mother cells done so much for medicine, how come her family can’t afford to see no doctors? Don’t make any sense. People got rich of my mother without us even knowing about them taking her cells, now we don’t get a dime(pg 9)?” It sounds crazy, but it really happened in the past.
There are some examples that other authors uses not chronologically to write a book or novel. The famous example is One Thousand and One Night and Catch-22 by the American author Joseph Heller. They use distinct way to write different story. If use chronologically to write the book, it will make the reader getting bored.
In conclusion, author Rebecca Skloot used different writing style to write this book The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. She has been successful and letting us deeply understand about Henrietta Lacks life, her HeLa cell and the hidden side of this story.
Gattaca.
Gattaca is a movie that is good but many people have forgotten about. It is a science fiction film written and directed by Andrew Niccol. It describes how in the future, when every children is born, their life will already be select of technique, when he or she will die, if the child will have chance to have cancer or other disease. When Vincent, one of the normal children was born, his DNA was tested and indicated he had a high probability of developing mental disorders, being myopic, having a heart defect, and his projected life expectancy was only 30.2 years. So Vincent’s parents decided to have another baby who had gene change. Vincent’s brother Anton is stronger and taller than him. When they were children, they had a game call “chicken”,both swim out to sea, and the first to give up and swim back to shore would be the loser. Anton always won because his genes were better than Vincent’s, later as young adults, Vincent challenged Anton to the game of chicken. This time it was the first time Vincent won the game. Since that, he figured out everything is possible, so he decided to leave home shortly thereafter. Vincent’s dream was to go to space, but the space company only hired employees who had better genes, so he found Jerome Eugene Morrow, a man who had perfect genes but a car accident had left him paralyzed from the waist down. Everyday Vincent used Eugene’s blood sample, urine and hair to pass screening and also obscure his own identity. He went through a lot trouble and issues, however he got into the rocket and sent to the space.
This movie Gattaca is a great movie, I was glad that I didn’t miss it. The scenario is wonderful but I was surprised about the ending. In the end, Vincent went to space but Eugenedecided to cremate himself maybe Eugenethought when Vincent was gone, he would feel alone or he couldn’t accept second place. In the middle of the story, Eugene told Vincent the accident was his own suicide plan, but he didn’t die, so when he helped Vincent finishes his dream, he felt life had nothing to do with him and if he died Vincent would kept his identity so Jerome Eugene Morrow this person will have no mistake and became a perfect man, so he committed suicide. I also like the last part of the film where Anton challenges Vincent again for swimming race. When they swimming out, Anton said its too far away and he want to go back to the shore, but Vincent explained that he never saved anything for the swim back. This sentence touches my heart and shows Vincent was strong, patient and never gives up. he will try his best to do one thing.

Miss Evers' Boys
Miss Evers’ Boys tells the story of Tuskegee experiment, which was the United States Government’s secret medical experiment on poor African Americans in the
years 1932-1972, to study the effect of syphilis. The nurse Miss Evers went to an old town and told men if the had bad blood, they should come with her. The government will offer them free treatment and benefit. So many of them followed Miss Evers to Tuskegee, including the group of African American dancers named “Miss Evers’ Boys” to thank Miss Evers for her help. The doctors Dr.Sam Brodus and Dr. Dougles injected a shot into patient’s body, they told patient it was the treatment shot, but they were only being studied. Even after penicillin was discovered to cure this disease, the government still kept treatment from these men so the ravages of the disease could continue to be studied. By the end of 1972, lot patients died but doctors successfully found the effects of syphilis.
The movie Miss Evers’ Boys is nonfiction and a little Drama. It is Drama because the nurse Miss Evers fell in love with a man named Caled Humohrey. He was one of the patients. He was also the member of the group named “Miss Evers’ Boys”. But in the end Miss Evers didn’t stay together with Caleb because she felt ashamed about not telling the truth.
Miss Evers’ Boys is a movie about doctors doing experiments on patients’ bodies. I don’t like this type movie much, because this kind movie will let me feel how cruel and painful humans can be. When I saw the first screen in the movie, the black doctor Sam Brodus took a big syringe with a big needle, shot it into a boy’s chest and pulled some red things out. I knew I wouldn’t like this movie. I prefer funny or action movies
